The fifth and sixth year old is in a transition period of great growth and change. According to Piaget, the child still views the world from a primarily ego centric perspective. He/She is, however, beginning to make sense of an external reality, including others around him/her especially peers. In the pre-kindergarten class, children will foster inquisitive nature and initiatives for independence across all areas of the curriculum, with an emphasis on the learning process rather than the end product.
